has peri been? i've been asking myself this same question. unfortunately, i haven't been anywhere too exciting or exotic to report about. in fact, i must admit that i've been i've been cheating on my interior design world with my graphic design lover. it's true. while i'm not working on interior spaces, i've been spending hours upon hours in classes, spending late nights with adobe photoshop, in design, & illustrator. but enough about me, let's talk about maps. [nice transition] if you're a world traveler or just an admirer of cartography, maps are a nice way to decorate your walls. there are numerous ways you can frame, hang, or place a map. you can even make it into a triptych or cut it into more sections. you can make it colorful, or sepia tone.

for those of you who don't know me, i am obsessed with accessories. i always felt that it's the odds and ends that make an outfit... and i find that to be true with interior spaces too. make the foundation rich & classic and add your pop with the accessories. you can change a dress with a necklace and you can change a sofa with pillows and a throw.

with that being said, i am a glasses girl. ever since i was little, i've always had a pretty deep collection of both sunglasses and regular glasses. i love vintage retro pieces, expensive eyewear, and cheap $10 sunnies. so right now i am digging the cat eyewear frame. a throwback to 50s fashionistas, or even an homage to the days of Cleopatra's sultry & ornate eye makeup.

pop up shops are a great trend right now. it's actually very simple. retail owners open up short term stores, while customers flock to the spaces so they can scoop up the products before the store disappears. this idea first developed in los angeles in 1999, but has since flourished as people look for short term real estate in this economy.

this friday, event designer david stark will open a pop up shop, called wood shop, inside his friend's nolita store, haus interior. with valentine's day around the corner and it being the month of love, the pop up shop's concept focuses on all things love, in the form of wood and all things related to wood shops. very clever idea and i don't doubt that it will deliver.

i love oly pieces. classic furniture with a slightly bizarre twist. the company works in an overall soft palette and then throws in a pop of excitement. i loved what they showed at the new york international gift fair this week. so very peacock of them. rich velvet-y blues and greens. bright and highly saturated colors next to stark white.

upon my discovery of henry leutwyler, i was immediately drawn to his art... and perhaps a bit uncomfortably [might i add]. to see such detailed images belonging to such iconic figures, i wasn't sure if i was doing something illegal. but i guess that's what leutwyler does. he gets personal with the artifacts, whereby they seem almost lifelike. once belonging to figures merely recognized by these exact material objects.

i had the pleasure of dining at pedregal's newest hotel, capella. what a magnificent hotel with an even more extraordinary location. built into the mountain, the hotel dramatically greets you with an excavated tunnel, lit with suspended lanterns. from there, you are welcomed into world unto its own.

well, i got my two front teeth years ago, so check that off the list. and it doesn't look like there will be peace on earth anytime soon. so aside from love, laughter & family, there are just a few things on my list to santa this holiday season.

the first is obviously bravo's andy cohen. but that may not work out so well for me so i'll go with tickets to see watch what happens live [which will be live 5 nights a week, starting in january].

not so mellow, huh? to put it simply, this bathroom is intensely striking (in a very good way). the thin black contemporary moulding that frames each wall adds to this bathroom's contemporary parisian style. the claw foot bathtub was painted black, but maintains a frame to itself with the white porcelain interior and claw feet. i also love the idea of framing a photo of fabric that is the same color as the paint on the wall. this may only work with bold colors. and tell me the footstool isn't the most precious added detail.

hockey is a band you should know. it really upsets me to think that they weren't a part of my music library for as long as they've been around. but rest assure, i found them. well.... i was introduced to them via online dating (cue embarrassed face). the point is, they are now a part of my music library, they are on my festival radar, and just a huge part of my life. love their sound and style.

lyle owerko, a photographer & filmmaker, is known for his urban images, as well as the powerful image that appeared on the cover of time magazine's september 11th issue. his portfolio speaks loudly, but i was immediately drawn to his visual timeline of the era of the boombox, also known as "the boombox project." also referred to as "ghetto blaster" or "jam box", the boombox represents our pop culture that dominated the 1980s. just imagine the boombox. where do your thoughts take you? mine automatically transcend me back to lloyd dobler standing outside with the boombox over his head, trying to win over the girl he lost. a moment that stands the test of time. a moment every girl wants to happen to her.

i'm a timeline type of person, in that i love seeing things evolve over time. to see the changes that take place based on an audience's needs or to be the cause whereby the audience is the effect. it's especially engaging when this "thing" that evolves relates to music.

my favorite holiday is upon us. tis the day for giving thanks. it usually begins tonight on thanksgiving eve and travels into tomorrow. it's the time when we give thanks, laugh with friends and family, drink a lot of sweet smelling wine, eat yummy food, and succumb to the decadent desserts that will make you swear to a strict diet on friday. but the most important questions still remains... what will your tablescape look like? you might be asking what a tablescape is. well, the term, made famous by food network's sandra lee, is the aesthetic layout of the banquet table, including the centerpiece, colors of linen, napkin folds, china & flatware, and any other elements that make up the design on and around the table.

i've been designing a new holiday advertisement for just 4 the home so i've been doing quite a bit of research. i found some fantastically executed holiday ads. they say sex sells, but i'm convinced that humor trumps sex. and, believe me, it's hard to execute humor through print ads while maintaining a simple message and incorporating images and words. it's definitely an industry for creatives with a witty intelligence.

coffee table books are probably one of my favorite genre of books, if you can call it a genre. a powerful image on the cover and large photos, drawings and descriptions inside. for a visual person like myself, it's a perfect gift and the perfect accessory. find out what the person loves, be it fashion, film, an artist, a director, dogs, a certain city, sneakers, cooking with paula deen, interior design, etc. and don't forget about the boys because there's some great books on sports stadiums, athletes, cars, gin, iconic music venues, cigars, etc. possibilities are endless and you can get creative with your pickings. just 4 the home decided to add coffee table books to their featured gifts for the holiday season. check out some of the fabulous titles. and, no, they don't have kramer's coffee table book about coffee tables.

the next set of coffee table books are little bit more special because they're leather bound limited edition books that you can monogram. i mean, how nice of a gift is that! i don't know about you, but if i loved the wizard of oz and i got a limited edition, sparkled ruby red leather bound coffee table book with my initials or name engraved on the cover, i'd be a pretty happy girl.

happy 44th anniversary rolling stone magazine. thank you for bringing the music culture into our homes, in the form of an odd shaped, extra long glossy paperback (bring back the old size & layout). originally known for its hippie counterculture accounts and political coverage by controversial journalist hunter s. thompson, rolling stone has gone through many formats. in the very first edition, published on november 9, 1967, jane wenner (who is still editor and publisher) said rolling stone "is not just about the music, but about the things and attitudes that music embraces."

every now and again i hear a song that is so incredibly infectious that i become stalker-like obsessed. usually it's a song i hear on fuv radio station (90.7) or in a random store or on a party playlist. i would never have thought that i would find my latest obsession on the real world: san diego. yes, i still watch the real world. no, i don't still wish i could be on it. yes, that last statement was a lie.

i've always had an admiration for the real world, the tv show. i think the concept is genius. "let's put a group of young strangers together in a house and tape their lives. but to make matters more interesting, because this is a social 'experiment', let's make one gay, one homophobic, one a lesbian who relates more to males than females, one a victim of domestic abuse, one a frat guy who's more than meets the eye, one an aspiring entertainer"... and you know why they cast it this way.... well, because that's the real world. i've always enjoyed people and culture (i was an anthropology minor) and i think it dates back to my first viewing of the real world.

the peacock is a thing of beauty. with velvet shades of blue, green, and purple, the peacock has been highly regarded throughout religious and cultural histories. in hinduism, it's associate with benevolence, patience, kindness, compassion and knowledge. in greco-roman mythology, the peacock's feathers were placed with hundreds of eyes, symbolizing the vault of heaven and the eyes of the stars. in christianity, the bird is an ancient symbol of eternal life. i just think peacocks are unusual and simply striking. so why not incorporate that into your home.

a picture is worth a thousand words. well what about a few pictures on a wall. what kind of story is that telling?

i love when similar objects are grouped together. that way you get lots of smaller stories that create a bigger picture. one way to achieve this is by hanging a collection of framed art on a wall, or even hanging empty frames on a wall. warning: this must be done right. the uniformity and repetition is key to success with an installation like this. the space between each frame should be similar in width so they each share a similar border that the wall creates.

i love music. it kicks off my morning and lays me to bed at night, while carrying me through the day. nothing triggers an emotion in me more than a simple tune.

call it a cult following, if you will. i can't get enough of the manhattan based band, cults. currently opening for foster the people, the hipster duo have gotten great reviews. their music is a little infectious.

there's a special place in my heart for red hot chili peppers. i think it's the same place where my california memories live. the video for the adventures of rain dance maggie makes me smile. oh venice boardwalk, here's to your rad existence.

fashion design and interior design go hand in hand. each one similar in style, always trying to set trends and create "the look" for the masses to follow, copy, and, finally, to exhaust. currently that trend is plaid. fall is always a season of patterns, but this pattern is preppier than ever. the equestrian look is IT. horses, plaids, leathers, tweeds... both in fashion and interiors. so i've decided to take that look and apply it to the new fall window of just 4 the home. i am covering the walls in this fabulous green, navy, and red plaid fabric, and decorating the space in an over the top equestrian look. horses and gold apples and stacks of old leather bound books. here's some of my inspiration.

whenever my friends and i would involve ourselves in philisophical & fantasy-like conversations, we'd always ask the question, "if you could have dinner with 5 people, dead or alive, who would they be"... steve jobs has always, without hesitation, fallen into my top 5. he's crazy smart, super creative, and can provide witty banter with my other guests. not to mention the fact that i can sit through his keynote speeches, watching in awe with what feels like a school girl's crush. his ability to take a complicated idea or technological application and almost "dumb it down" for us common folk. to take something so foreign and make it so comforting, so attractive that it exudes a sexy quality. he is my generation's einstein.

it was my father's birthday yesterday (happy birthday dad) and what better way to celebrate than friday night in the city. my family is very artsy and hip. as you know we're all involved in the design industry so we like to explore restaurants with fantastic decor. food obviously is an important factor, but a fabulously designed atmosphere definitely heightens our ratings. if a friend raves about a restaurant, i always ask about the decor before recommending it to my family. bacaro was the restaurant of choice, located on division street on the lower east side. he had been there once before and describes it as a small, busy hipster restaurant. this doesn't sound very different from other places on the lower east side, but i did a bit of research and it looks awesome.

peasant chef/ owner, franco decarlo, opened this restaurant with exposed brick & stone, wooden rafters, and salvaged barn wood tables, creating little romantic nooks lit only by candles and few elegant chandeliers. it has sort of a speakeasy, tuscan vibe. restaurantaddict.net describes bacaro like so..."if bruce wayne were italian and opened a restaurant in rural tuscany, bacaro might be what it would look like."

ever since i was a kid i loved seeing window displays. my parents used to bring my sister and i into the city during holiday season so we could view the creative windows of barneys and saks and bergdorfs. the more imaginative, the better. i mean, it's the narration to a story. it's an invitation to the customers. my window is my book. so as we get deeper into the fall season, it's about time i take down my summer window display for just 4 the home and create one for the season of fall. i'm not quite sure what route i'm going to take. i can go for the wow factor in color or pattern or simplicity. but i definitely want to achieve the season of fall. with windows, and displays altogether, i like to be inspired. here's a little taste of that inspiration.

wax tailor is the alias of french trip hop/ hip hop producer, jean-christophe le saout. not quite sure how i discovered his music, but ever since i did, i've been hooked. a brand new sound that's like a re-invention of music. his sound is immediately identifiable as his own. and his grooves alone make me want to hang out with him. it's his ability and artistry that exudes coolness in a unique, off the beaten path way.

the videos for wax tailor are also unique. like mini art installations. original and groundbreaking styles with an old school retro vibe.

dark gray is such a rich color. paint your walls in a dark shade of gray and it changes your room. it's a very popular color, or rather shade of color. it adds a bit of an edge and makes the other tones in your room pop, especially those neons and lacquers that are everywhere.

it all began with adam and eve. or say they say. but what did begin with adam and eve is the introduction of the evil serpent. the slimy, slithering creature who lures eve into its manipulative ways. snakes have always gotten a bad rap. always associated with sneaky, creepy, cold, evil, and just plain gross. don't get me wrong, i'm not pro snake whatsoever. in fact, for lack of a better term, they give me the heeby jeebies. i'll run like hell if i ever see one. with that being said, i'm not quite sure how i feel about snakes or snakeskin in an interior space. what are your thoughts?

i love accessories by lazy susan. they have some really fun and innovative pieces. each piece is designed to be unique, yet classic enough to fit in any, or most rooms. frames, vases, baskets, candle holders, fillers, lamps, trays, you name it. their team of creatives travel the world looking for new materials and inspirations. a few months ago i was lucky enough to go to their pop up showroom and shop the new collection for just 4 the home. well, the shipment has arrived. and 9 boxes later, i'm grateful i didn't go for that manicure last night.

ladies, and probably a lot of men these days, love getting ready and beautifying themselves. you know, taking their time to apply the right cremes and makeup, perfect how their hair lies, or choose the appropriate scent for that day's adventures. like most people, i spend my mornings before work with a large cup of coffee hanging out in my bathroom. the same goes for the evenings before i go out... except i trade my coffee mug for a glass of wine. bathrooms have become a common place to hang out, a spa like escape. currently, i'm loving the clean crisp bathroom with the unexpected hit of rustic. it's probably not surprising, seeing as though most interior spaces i go gaga for have that same feeling of clean with a touch of old. modern meets rustic.

much to my dismay i did not hit the bullseye in target this morning. in fact, i barely hit the board. yes, i was one of the crazies who woke up early and ran to target to get first pickings at their new missoni collection (i may have even planned it out so that i could sleep on long island and only drive 5 minutes to the nearest target). however, i forgot about the bulldog housewives long island breeds. mothers, daughters, and even some husbands were waiting over an hour before target opened. once 8am hit, they darted into the store, with a plan in place. each person in their family would hit a different area. mom took clothing, child took shoes, and dad took the home aisle. armed with their own shopping carts, their mission was to grab as much as possible and then meet up in another area to go through and pick out exactly what they wanted. those of us who weren't as prepared stood on the sidelines, hovering and even begging for whatever they didn't want. boy did i underestimate the long island housewife. they are cunning. but it seems as though this occurred at all the long island targets. i may have gone to more than one target and called all that fell within a 40 mile radius.

i can't imagine target knew what they were getting into. as most of you know, their website completely crashed. this is supposed to be a month long event so hopefully they restock all the stores and get that site up and running. congrats to target and congrats to that 16 year old girl who's wearing my missoni cardigan and floppy hat, thanks to her mom. but in all honesty, congrats to missoni for achieving what no other designed has achieved with target. sounds to me like some other high end designers may be partnering with target soon. gucci? prada? dare i say chanel?

it's hard to believe it's been ten years since the 9/11 attacks on our country. like everyone else, i can remember the exact accounts of that entire day. a sense of shock that turned to a feeling of overwhelming sadness then to anger and then finally to strength. the days following the attacks, i never felt more proud to be an american... to be a new yorker. much to my surprise, yesterday was the first september 11th, since the horrific day 10 years ago, that i was in new york. and with that, all those original feelings came back. shock. sadness. anger. strength. i watched the memorial coverage, walked around the city, and, once again, felt that sense of pride. i think they did an amazing job on the memorial site. truly a place of remembrance. when i went to bed and looked out my window i saw those two powerful lights shine straight up into the sky, shining bright amongst the city's buildings, creating new york's original skyline.
